Types And Basic Introduction Of Concrete Pumps

A concrete pump (бетонный насос) is an essential tool to have in any type of construction project. It is a machine that is used to convey liquid concrete to the construction site via pumping. Concrete pumps have played a key role in revolutionizing the construction industry. This is especially so in the construction of high-rise buildings.

Traditionally, cranes and manual labor were the only available methods of conveying and pouring concrete. However, these methods had numerous drawbacks. For example, cranes could only deliver one bucketload of concrete at a time, which reduced efficiency. Manual labor, on the other hand, was subject to human limitations. This means that the speed of conveying and pouring was low. The workers also couldn’t provide a constant flow of concrete as they constantly grew tired.

However, over the past few decades, pumping has become the preferred and most widely used method of conveying concrete. Different concrete pump designs have been developed, however, the twin-cylinder hydraulic pump is the global standard design.

Working Principle Of The Concrete Pump

The twin-cylinder hydraulic pump operates under the principle of one piston drawing concrete from the hopper, which is the concrete source, into its cylinder while the other piston simultaneously pushes the concrete in its cylinder into the discharge pipes. There is a valve which controls which cylinder is opened to the concrete source and which cylinder is opened to the discharge pipes. The valve switches over each time a piston completes a task.

Improvements have been made to this design in order to facilitate high-pressure pumping. This has helped make the pumps very efficient in pumping concrete in different heights and lengths.

Types Of Concrete Pumps

Based on the type of engine used to drive them, there are two main classifications of pumps.

Trailer Concrete Pumps

This type of pump is mounted on a trailer and pulled by a truck or a capable vehicle. Hoses made of steel or rubber are usually attached to the outlet. Additional pipes can be connected in order to reach different locations within the site. They have a lower pumping rate than boom and truck-mounted pumps and are often used in small-scale projects such as swimming pools, sidewalks e.t.c. Electric Concrete Pumps

As the name suggests, this type of concrete pump is driven by an electric motor. It relies on electric power, hence, it can only be used in areas where there is sufficient electricity.

Diesel Concrete Pumps

This type is preferred due to its excellent conveying ability, quick pumping speed, less congestion, and reliable performance. It is suited to operate in areas which have no supply of electricity.

Based on the structure and purpose, there are 4 main types of concrete pumps.

Concrete Mixer Pumps

This type of pump perfectly combines concrete mixing and concrete pumping functions. However, they feature small size and power. They are often used in floor heating and spraying construction projects. Visit this website (https://aimixmachinery.ua) to learn more about concrete equipment.

Concrete Boom Pumps

This type of concrete pump is usually attached to a truck and it has a boom. A boom is an articulating robotic arm that is remote controlled. These pumps are generally used in large construction sites to place concrete accurately. The boom enables concrete to be placed at different heights in high-rise constructions. They are capable of pumping high volumes of concrete in a small period of time.

Truck Mounted Concrete Pump

Unlike the boom pumps, this type doesn’t feature a robotic arm, hence, has more labor intensity. However, it has less land occupation and lower operating costs.
